Portraits

What is a Portrait?
Of all the other genres of photography I am most drawn to portrait photography. There is something about a strong intimate portrait that captures the essence of a person so well that it transcends them. The image becomes something more than a likeness of a person but becomes an archetype of an emotion, or a thought, or an idea. A good example of this is in the portraiture of Richard Avedon and Irving Penn. Penn's photograph of Martha Graham is my favorite example of this. She is photographed in what looks like a corner with two sharp planes threatening to swallow her, however, she stands erect and defiant, her elbows touching the sides of the walls as if she were holding them up through her own sheer force of will.

Commissioned Portraits
I am available for commissioned portraits. I often chat with my subjects over a length of time so I can get a sense of who they are. It's very difficult to take a good picture of someone you don't know or don't care about. My sessions usually run about 2 hours, which includes setting up, getting my subjects comfortable and exposing the film. I try to work with available light as much as possible as it lends to the intimacy of a photograph. I print all portraits on fiber paper that is of archival quality and has superior tonality. Prices for portraits range between $200-$500 depending on final output size. Please email me if you're interested in a portrait session.
